    Passive House Builder - Thermohouse

When I visted Dubai recently, I had the pleasure of meeting Mike Cronin, owner and managing director of Irish company Thermohouse the passive house builder, developer and manufacturer of one of the most versatile passive house building systems on the market. Mike is establishing a manufacturing facility in JAFZA - Jebel Ali Free Zone - in Dubai UAE. Mike believes there is enormous potential for his system in the Middle East and North Africa.

A passive house is a building in which a comfortable interior climate can be maintained without active heating or cooling systems. Passive building systems are perfectly engineered to keep a house warm in a cold climate; or cool in a hot climate. The passive house is the ultimate in low energy building and is recognised worldwide as the most advanced in terms of energy performance of buildings. The passive house offers one of the most desirable technological and economical solutions for comfortable living and working.

A passive house building block is a three-part design; consisting of two outer walls of 125mm industrial polystryrene connected by steel ties across a 150mm internal cavity. A range of block designs facilitate the complete construction of any building. Concrete is poured in situ at various stage of build. Insulating concrete formwork (ICF) is an innovative modern method of construction, which combines the inherent strength of concrete with the excellent insulation properties of polystyrene to produce cost-effective and durable buildings.

Passive House designing requires a knowledgeable person using a proprietary performance-modeling software which functions towards keeping energy use very low in the finished project. Passive House building requires a trained and knowledgeable builder who can adhere to painstaking details.

For a code-built home that is created with a focus on economy, meeting the Passive House standard will add between 5%-10% to the cost of construction. However, monthly energy-cost savings are substantial. Any increased up-front costs will be recouped in 10 years or less.

Passive House uses a lot of modeling, some of which compares the volume of the house to the footprint area it takes up to determine energy usage. The smaller the structure, the tougher the challenge.
